Renovating an entire room in your home can be exciting and stressful, all at the same time. If you love a challenge and are planning to do a chunk of the work yourself, you’ll need adequate DIY skills and a whole lot of patience. If you hire a contractor to handle the bigger renovations, there are still some projects you can tackle yourself. Either way, renovations involve an extensive amount of planning to ensure everything is done to your liking. This is particularly true of bathroom remodels.

Maybe your bathroom has outdated decor and you’re ready to update its look. Maybe a few issues have arisen and it’s time for your bathroom to get a much needed facelift. Or maybe you’re looking to sell your home in the next year and hope a bathroom remodel will increase your selling price. Whatever the reason, there are a few tips every homeowner can follow to have a successful bathroom renovation.

Plan it out

Before you go out and buy materials or look for a contractor to hire, you’re going to need to plan out your renovation. This ensures that the entire process is cohesive so you won’t end up regretting any of the details. Where do you want your utilities to be? What color scheme do you want to go with? Is there anything you want to change about your lighting fixtures? Knowing the answers to these questions will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

Gather tools and supplies — or research contractors

The tools and supplies you’ll need will depend on the kind of renovations you’re doing, but there are a few standard things you can purchase, such as a safety mask, gloves, hand tools, and power tools. Other supplies you might need could include a bucket, spackle, paintbrushes, extension cords, larger trash cans, and you might even need to consider renting a dumpster. If you won’t be doing all of the renovations yourself, this is the time to research local contractors to find the best people suited for the job.

Demolition, followed by inspection

You need to gut the space before the renovations can begin. This includes emptying all cabinets, removing towel bars, removing your current fixtures, removing the flooring (if necessary), and shutting off the water. Once you do this, you’ll want to inspect your space for damage that needs to be prioritized before you can start renovating, like mold or drywall issues.

Begin renovating

Larger fixtures — showers, tubs, toilets — must be installed first. Once this is completed, you can move on to wall and subflooring, as well as putting down the floor covering you’ve chosen. After this is completed and everything looks good, you can turn your attention to the smaller fixtures, like your sink and towel bars, as well as your cabinets. Then, everything should be finished and ready for your final touches.
